Medical needs are not always lifelong. Sometimes, they are the result of a sudden, life-altering accident. Today, we are sharing a message from Shannon Bullen, whose daughter faced a daunting recovery after breaking her femur just before her second birthday.

In Her Words: Shannon’s Breakthrough

"The Whizzer was literally life-changing after my daughter broke her femur, leaving her in a hip spica cast for her second birthday. We can leave the house again! It has given us some freedom back."

What is a Hip Spica Cast?

A hip spica cast is used to keep the pelvis and thighs completely still so that a broken femur (thigh bone) or a hip can heal correctly. For a toddler, this presents several major obstacles.

Total Immobilisation

The cast usually goes from the chest down to the ankles, with a small opening left for the nappy area. This rigid structure is essential for healing, but it makes normal movement impossible.

The Sitting Struggle

Children in a spica cast cannot sit on a standard toilet, a potty, or even a normal car seat. They are often held in a semi-reclined or "frog-leg" position, which requires a lot of extra support and padding.

The Nappy Challenge

Keeping a spica cast clean is the biggest challenge for parents. If urine leaks inside the cast, it can cause skin irritation, sores, and a very difficult-to-remove smell. Because the cast cannot be taken off for a bath, hygiene is a constant worry.

Why Families Often Stay at Home

When a child is in a spica cast, many parents feel trapped. The logistics of trying to keep a cast dry while out in public are so overwhelming that many families simply stop leaving the house.

  • Public Changing Tables: Most are too small and too hard for a child in a heavy, wide-set cast.

  • The Leak Anxiety: Parents often spend their time waiting for the inevitable leak into the cast padding, which turns a fun outing into a stressful cleanup.

How the Whizzer Restored Shannon’s Freedom

For Shannon’s daughter, the Whizzer became the bridge between the cast and the outside world. It provided a practical solution to a very difficult physical problem.

Precise Positioning

Because the Whizzer is compact and ergonomic, it can be positioned exactly where it is needed within the small opening of the spica cast. This allows parents to catch urine before it ever touches the cast padding.

Freedom to Travel

It allowed Shannon to manage her daughter's needs in the back of a car or a stroller. This removed the need to find spica-friendly public restrooms, which are rarely available in high street shops or parks.

Keeping up with Potty Training

For a toddler who was already potty trained or just starting the journey, the Whizzer allows them to maintain that "I need to go" habit. It means they aren't forced to rely solely on nappies during their recovery, making the transition back to normal life much easier once the cast is removed.

Support and Resources for Parents

If you are currently navigating life with a spica cast, please know that there is a community ready to help. Here are some essential UK-based resources:

  • NHS Guidance: Caring for a child in a hip spica cast – This guide from Oxford University Hospitals provides excellent clinical advice on positioning and skin care.

  • National Charity Support: Steps Charity Worldwide – Based in the UK, Steps is the leading charity for lower limb conditions and offers a wealth of practical advice for spica parents.

  • Facebook Support Group: Hip Spica Parents - UK Support Group – A dedicated space for UK parents to share tips on clothing, car seats, and everyday "hacks" for spica life.

  • Equipment Advice: Living with a Spica – The DDH UK website offers great insights into the equipment you might need during the recovery period.

A Note for Spica Parents

Recovery is a marathon, but you do not have to run it from inside your four walls. Tools like the Whizzer, beanbag chairs for comfortable positioning, and spica-friendly strollers are part of a toolkit for reclaiming your family life while the bone heals.

We are so happy to hear that Shannon’s daughter is back on the move. The Whizzer is proud to have been the safety net during those tough months in the cast.
